Grant money available to restore critical coastal salmon and steelhead habitat

The California Department of Fish and Game announced that approximately $10 million in grant funding is available to restore critical salmon and steelhead habitat through coastal watershed projects.

The money is available through the annual Fisheries Restoration Grant Program, which is administered by the Department of Fish and Game, according to a news release.

The deadline for applications is May 9, and workshops explaining the application process begin Thursday.

The Fisheries Restoration Grant Program has funded projects from sediment reduction to watershed education throughout coastal areas. The grant program was established in 1981 with contributions from the CDFG, federal and local governments, tribes, water districts, fisheries organizations, watershed restoration groups, the California Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps and private landowners.

The Fisheries Restoration Grant Program is nearing the $200 million mark in support of habitat-related projects for anadromous salmon and steelhead, which migrate to freshwater rivers and streams for breeding and spend the majority of their adult lives in the ocean.
